In the top ten the ones which are actually horror (excluding 'Godzilla' and 'Vampire's Kiss') all the films are based around physical violence for example 'Halloween', 'Behind the Mask', 'Friday the 13th' and 'Scream' all have high ratings showing the effectiveness of a simple genre. Other films that are also highly rated are 'The Evil Dead', 'Army of Darkness' and 'Shaun of the Dead' which are all Zombie films. This shows that that simple genre though can be repetitive is very popular and highly rated among the public thereby making a safe genre to do as it already has a strong established fan base. The other films on there like 'The Shining', 'Ginger Snaps' and 'Alien' all also are based around physical violence and gore. 'Ginger Snaps' being a werewolf film, 'Alien' obviously based around creatures in space and 'The shining' though it has a more physiological/paranormal side to it does contain slasher like horror. In conclusion this shows that horrors based around physical violence are much more appreciated among audiences compared to super natural and psychological horrors this could be down the simplicity of some of these films or that the particular ones are now considered classic.
